Newman to be declared ‘Blessed’ this year

Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints, has said that the beatification of Cardinal Newman – the last stage on the step to canonisation – is imminent, and may happen this year. This suggests that the Vatican is satisfied that claims that the cure of a 69-year-old American from a crippling spinal condition after praying to Cardinal Newman was miraculous.

This announcement from Rome coincides with the publication of John Henry Newman: A Mind Alive by Roderick Strange.

 NEW TITLES  - Publishing 28th April 2008

AFTER MCDONALDIZATION: Mission, Ministry and Christian Discipleship in an Age of Uncertainty, £11.95, John Drane.

The sequel to the bestselling The McDonaldization of the Church.

The decline in church attendance continues in the US and Europe, yet
increasing numbers of people are turning to ‘spirituality’; the continuing impact of globalization and consumerism has been joined by a post-9/11 culture of fear and a search for truth.

In this sequel to the hugely influential The McDonaldization of the Church, John Drane considers what must come next for the Church. He presents the case for a more ‘practical theology’, a reinvigorated style of ministry and the
restatement of classic Christian beliefs for the 21st century; not just as ‘things to believe’ but ‘values to live by’.

John Drane teaches at theological colleges and seminaries around the world. He is the author of many books including The McDonaldization of the Church (DLT).

MAID IN GOD'S IMAGE: In Search of the Unruly Woman, £12.95, Verena Wright.

‘…paving the way for an entirely different world view on the spiritual
nature and role of women.’                      - Joan Chittister

In Maid in God’s Image, Verena Wright explores the feminine dimension in a range of texts, including film, fiction and the gospels. In exploring the ways in which certain voices are marginalized and silenced, she seeks to alert readers to a new way of seeing, that acknowledges and values the feminine dimension as both social and spiritual resource and essential component of all human being.

Verena Wright is a writer and a member of the National Board of Catholic Women.  She is active in the Diocese of Portsmouth, a regular commentator on Catholic issues and presenter of a local radio programme Spirit Level.  She has also been involved for a number of years as a teacher of English literature in adult and higher education.

THEOLOGY FOR PILGRIMS, £14.95, Nicholas Lash.

A new collection of essays by the most influential Catholic theologian of his generation.

Nicholas Lash’s new collection of essays exposes the crisis in our thinking about God which is at the root of our misunderstandings and mistakes about science and politics, ethics and economics, life and death. Opening with a devastating critique of Richard Dawkins, he goes on to discuss the ‘impossibility of atheism’, disentangle faith and reason, retrieve the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and – amongst many other delights – offer sparkling insights into Diderot and Joseph Conrad.

Nicholas Lash was the Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge from 1978 to 1999, succeeding Donald Mackinnon. His many books include A Matter of Hope (DLT/University of Notre Dame Press), and Seeing in the Dark (DLT).
