Basil Hume
Basil Hume OSB was the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster from 1976 – 1999, and a monk, and former Abbot, of Ampleforth Abbey. One of the best-loved religious figures in the United Kingdom, he was the author of several best-selling books. He died in June 1999.
Cardinal Hume died in 1999. When he was told he was terminally ill with cancer, his reaction was to go to the hospital chapel to pray before the crucifix.
As these previously unpublished reflections show, he had great devotion to the last words of Jesus. In a sense, he made Jesus' prayer his own: 'Into your hands I commend my spirit'. Out of the depths of despair and suffering he was searching for hope.

The Mystery of Love is a collection of ‘starting points for prayer and meditation’. It includes a moving meditation shared with his friend Crowley, Bishop of Middlesbrough, John Crowley writes in his Foreword, ‘The poignant context gives an especially luminous quality to this particular meditation’.
A profound collection of meditations and reflections on the cross. They speak of the mystery of suffering and the mystery of God's love shown particularly in the death and resurrection of Christ. Drawing on the liturgy of the Church, especially the Easter liturgy, Cardinal Hume reminds us that Christ shared our pain and that 'our suffering brings us closer to Christ and closer to God.'
At the heart of the Christian faith is the mystery of the Incarnation – God showing the depth of his love for us by becoming human. In this book, which he was working on in the weeks before his death, Cardinal Basil Hume reflects on the Incarnation and its meaning for our lives and for the contemporary world. He writes about love and relationships, saints for our time, peace and justice, and preparation for death. A book of deep simplicity and prayerfulness, it speaks to those within the churches and also to those on the margins of faith.
Since its first publication in 1997, Basil in Blunderland has become one of the most successful and best-loved of all religious books, enchanting young and old, believer and sceptic. What matters, however, is that minds and hearts should be involved in the search for God, where the seeking and the finding go hand in hand. From a game of hide and seek, the Cardinal draws reflections on prayer and the spiritual life. Few readers will fail to gain encouragement and help from the wisdom in these pages.
